Colonels Fall 10-3 at Babson in Non-Conference Baseball Action

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Sophomore right hander Matt Grenier (Rochester, N.Y.) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the offense erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning helping Babson College defeat Curry College 10-3 this afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Govoni Field.

First-year Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) and junior Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, N.J.) each doubled while senior Sean Cleary (Milton, Mass.) and junior Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) added singles helping the Beavers’ rally for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie, sending Babson to its sixth win in its seven games.

Boyce was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and 2 RBI to lead the Babson attack while Gonzalez added two hits and two runs for the Beavers and senior Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.) scored twice. Six different players recorded a hit and seven different players scored a run in the win.

Babson moves to 16-11 with the win, while Curry drops to 8-15 with the loss.

Grenier and his counterpart, Curry senior Alex Sammons (Irvine, Calif.) dominated the game early as both allowed only two base runners through the first five innings and got solid play behind them in the field.

Junior Sam Barron (Florence, Mass.) reached on a throwing error and advanced to second base to lead off the second inning, before reaching to third on senior Matt Drew’s (Waltham, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. Grenier induced a fly out to shallow right field from senior David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) one batter later and Gonzalez threw a strike to Cleary at the plate to cut down Barron and get out of the inning.

Sammons’ biggest jam in the early innings came right out of the gate as Boyce hit a one-out single up the middle, stole second, and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Sammons got a shallow fly out to center and ground ball to second base to help the Colonels escape any damage.

The Beavers finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning, manufacturing three runs on four hits and two stolen bases. Gonzalez started the rally with a one-out single through the left side before stealing second base to get into scoring position. Boyce hit an RBI single to center field to score Gonzalez one batter later for a 1-0 lead. After a Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) fly out, Jonasson hit a two-out single to left center and later stole second to join Boyce in scoring position. Senior Billy Miller (Sagamore Beach, Fla.) brought them both home with a single to right center, pushing the advantage to 3-0 through six.

Curry battled back though, as junior Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass.) reached on a fielding error and Barron got Curry’s first hit with an infield single to put runners on first and second with just one out. From there the Colonels took advantage of three Babson defensive miscues to come back and even the game at 3-3. Rodriguez scored the Colonels’ first run, before Drew and Stevens scored with two outs after reaching on a fielder’s choice and single, respectively.

The Colonels threatened again in the eighth inning as junior Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, Mass.) worked a one-out walk and senior Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, Calif.) reached on a throwing error. Grenier worked out of trouble though, getting a a fly ball out to center and getting out of the inning when Cleary cut McDonald down attempting to steal third base.

Sammons (1-3), who was terrific for Curry through the first five innings, took the loss, giving up six earned runs on seven innings. He struck out two and walked just one. Grenier (4-1) went the distance for Babson, tossing his third complete game of the year, allowing just one earned run on three hits. He struck out three and gave up just one walk.

Prior to the game Babson College welcomed its newest “teammate” Brendan Barrie of Chestnut Hill to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The Beavers have partnered with Team IMPACT, a non-profit devoted to providing support for children affected by life-threatening illnesses through engagement with college sports teams.
