Baseball Drops 10-8 Decision at Non-Conference Foe Johnson & Wales

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Johnson & Wales University baseball team posted a 10-8 victory against Curry in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Tuesday afternoon.  With the win JWU improves to 14-8 on the season while Curry falls to 8-12 for the year.

Johnson & Wales got on the board first when back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore Alex Pezzuto (Hastings, N.Y.) and junior Zach Boyes (West Warwick, R.I.) made the score 2-0.  A solo home run by junior James Reyes (Providence, R.I.) gave the Wildcats the 3-0 advantage.

Curry chipped away at the lead in the top of the fourth after a two-run blast from junior Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass.) cut the lead to 3-2.  The Colonels knotted the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth on an RBI bunt single by junior Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, Mass.).  JWU replied in the bottom of the frame, going up 5-3 on a two-run home run by Pezzuto.  Once again Curry responded and the tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by freshman Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) and an RBI single by sophomore Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.).

In the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats capitalized on three unearned runs, including a two-run double by Pezzuto to take the 8-5 advantage.  JWU used an RBI single by sophomore Jack Dickerson (Garnet Valley, Pa.) to make the score 9-5.  Curry again responded in the top of the eighth when they tallied three runs, including a two-run single by sophomore Brandon Lewis (Barrington, R.I.) to cut the lead to 9-8.  In the bottom of the inning, a solo shot by junior Tyler Newell (Westerly, R.I.) added an insurance run and propelled the Wildcats to the 10-8 victory.

Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI for Curry while McCann went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the setback for the Colonels.  Pezzuto went 3-for-5 with a run scored and five RBI while Newell went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the win for the Wildcats.  Freshman John Amodeo (Mahopac, N.Y.) picked up the win for Johnson & Wales, giving up five runs on seven hits with 11 strikeouts in seven innings of work while senior Chris DePalma (Taunton, Mass.) notched his fourth save of the season with an inning and a third of scoreless relief.

The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, April 4 when they travel to Bridgewater State for a non-conference contest, starting at 3:30 p.m. The Colonels next play at Wheaton College on April 6, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (Recap courtesy of JWU Sports Information)
