Drew and Fitzpatrick Toss Complete Games as Baseball Sweeps Roger Williams
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College took both games in a doubleheader against Roger Williams University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball action Sunday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels took the opener, 3-2, and followed with a 9-3 victory in the nightcap. Curry is now 8-11 on the season (5-1 CCC), while the Hawks now stand at 5-16 (1-5 CCC).

GAME ONE

In the opener, the Colonels put the first runs of the game on the board in the bottom of the fourth after junior Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass.) belted a two-run homer to left. Freshman Matt Warren (Wilbraham, Mass.) helped extend the lead in the sixth after an RBI single to right center brought home senior David Stephens (Deerfield Beach, Fla.), giving the hosts a 3-0 lead.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Roger Williams’ sophomore Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.) hit a two-RBI double to right center to cut the deficit to one (3-2). After walking sophomore Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.), Curry senior Matt Drew (Waltham, Mass.) secured the victory for the Colonels with back-to-back strikeouts.

Drew pitched all seven innings and improved to 2-1 on the season, allowing six hits and two earned runs, while striking out eight. Sophomore Sean Boyle (Arlington, Mass.) also went the distance, allowing six hits and two earned runs, while striking out six. Boyle now stands at 2-3.

GAME TWO

In the nightcap, Colonels’ junior Sam Barron (Florence, Mass.) brought home a pair of runs in the first with a single to right. Curry extended the lead by four (6-0) in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run homer to right center off the bat of junior Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, Mass.).

Both teams plated two runs in the third inning. Pascarella hit an RBI double to right center and was then brought home by freshman Derek Jerome’s (New Bedford, Mass.) single through the left side. In the bottom of the frame with one out and the bases loaded, senior Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, Calif.) hit an RBI single to right, followed by a McDonald squeeze bunt to third to bring home the second run.

After two scoreless innings, both teams scored one more run in the sixth. Senior Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) hit an RBI double down the left field line to bring Roger Williams to within five (8-3). In the bottom of the inning, Stephens recorded an RBI single to right, bringing home Rodriguez to account for the 9-3 final.

Freshman Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) pitched all seven innings for the Colonels, improving to 3-2 on the season. Fitzpatrick allowed seven hits and two earned runs, while striking out seven. Freshman Ryan Tita (Newton, Conn.) absorbed the loss for the Hawks, falling to 1-1 on the season. Tita allowed six hits and six runs in 1 2/3 innings of work on the mound.

Both teams resume play on Tuesday, as Curry travels to Providence, R.I. for a single non-conference game with Johnson and Wales University beginning at 3:30 p.m. Roger Williams hosts Gordon College in Bristol, R.I. for a conference doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
