Baseball Suffers a 16-3 Setback at Castleton State

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Curry College Baseball team suffered a 16-3 loss at Castleton State College in non-conference baseball action at Spartan Field Saturday afternoon. Castleton evens its record at 8-8 with the win, while Curry falls to 6-11.

The Spartans sent 11 men to the plate during an eight-run third inning, breaking the game open. Macyn Clifford (Brookline, N.H.) provided the big blow, a three-run home run to left-centerfield. Joe Borowski (Schenectady, N.Y.), Cameron Curler (Vergennes, Vt.) and Matt McNamee (Pawling, N.Y.) also provided run-scoring singles during the rally.

In the bottom of the fourth, David Brandt made the Colonels pay for walking the bases loaded, as the Spartans' centerfielder cleared them with an inside-the-park homer to left, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Curler went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Pete Wagner (Brattleboro, Vt.) also added a pair of hits to go along with one run and one RBI.

Castleton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, on a Borowski sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single to left by Wagner. Brandt drew a lead-off walk, stole second and moved the third on a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y.). After Borowski’s fly ball to left brought home Brandt, Wagner’s ringing single scored Curler from second who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

Curry took advantage of a Spartan defensive miscue to plate a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second, as Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, Mass.) provided a sacrifice fly to left and Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, Calif.) brought home a run with a swinging-bunt single down the third-base line.

The Colonels returned the favor in the bottom of the second as Castleton plated a pair of unearned runs as Brandt and Curler each had RBI singles to push the lead to 4-2.

Castleton starter Derek Osborne (Springfield, Vt.) was lifted in favor of Adam Greenlese (Shokan, N.Y.) in the top of the third and he was rudely greeted by Curry right fielder Sam Barron (Florence, Mass.), who deposited the first pitch he saw over the leftfield fence for his third home run of the season. Greenlese settled down to retire the next three Colonels he faced on 10 pitches, then worked around two walks in the fourth to keep the Spartans comfortably ahead and earn the win in relief.

The Spartans remain home for a non-conference match up on Tuesday at 3 pm versus Southern Vermont. Curry returns to Commonwealth Coast Conference play tomorrow at 12 pm when the Colonels host a doubleheader with Roger Williams. (Recap courtesy of Castleton State Sports Information)
