Baseball Scores Dramatic 9-8 Eleven-Inning Win Over Fitchburg State
MILTON, Mass. – In eleven innings, Curry College picked up a 9-8 win against visiting Fitchburg State University in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels improved to 6-10, while the Falcons fell to 3-12.

After holding Fitchburg scoreless in the top of the first frame, Curry scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Mike DeLosSantos (Waterford, Conn.) hit a two-out, bases loaded single to right to bring home a run.

Sophomore Matt O’ Neill (Milton, Mass.) followed that with a bases-clearing double to left. Freshman Derek Pizarro (Cambridge, Mass.) then hit a single up the middle to bring home O’Neill and give the Colonels a 5-0 lead after one.

The Falcons put their first run on the board in the third, after junior Chris Rivera (New Britain, Conn.) hit a solo homerun to center. In the fifth, Rivera recorded his second RBI with a single up the middle and was later brought home by senior Frank Yavosky (Westminster, Mass.) to trim the deficit to two (5-3).

Fitchburg pulled within one in the seventh, after junior Mike Szajner (Leominster, Mass.) hit an RBI double to left. In the following frame, Rivera hit a two-RBI single to left to give the Falcons a 6-5 lead. The Colonels responded in the bottom of the eighth inning, after senior David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) hit an RBI double to right, tying the game at 6-6.

In the tenth, Fitchburg plated two runs. The first came on a failed pickoff attempt, while the second came after an RBI single off the bat of junior Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn.). Stephens tied the game again in the bottom of the frame with a two-RBI double down the left field line. After holding the Falcons hitless in the top of the eleventh, Curry junior Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass.) hit a walk-off RBI single to left, driving home senior Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, Calif.).

Freshman Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) picked up the winning, allowing five hits and one earned run in three innings of work. Junior Zach Bombria (Bolton, Conn.) absorbed the loss, giving up three hits and three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings on the mound. Both pitchers now stand at 2-2 on the season.
