Baseball Takes a Pair at Conference Rival Nichols
DUDLEY, Mass. – Seniors Carlos Cornejo and David Stevens each batted 4-for-8 to help Curry sweep a doubleheader hosted by Nichols on Sunday afternoon as the Colonels won 9-1 and 5-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference baseball action.

Curry crossed the plate first in the top of the third inning as a fielder's choice off the bat of junior Sam Barron drove in a run. Junior Matt Rodriguez later sent a sacrifice fly to left field to plate the second run for the visitors. The Colonels extended the lead with four more runs in the fourth. Sophomore Cam Despres laid down a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed and allowed a pair of base runners to score. Two batters later another miscue led to another Curry player to touch home. The final run of the inning came on an RBI-single by Cornejo.

With two outs, first-year Brett Jackson reached first as Curry mishandled a bunt to send in the lone run of the game for the Bison. The visitors tacked on three more runs on a Despres home run to left field.

Colonels' senior pitcher Matt Drew evened out his record at 1-1 as he surrendered seven hits over seven innings and set down seven Bison. Sophomore Tyler Shute slipped to 0-2 allowing nine runs – four earned – on ten hits in the complete game effort.

In the second game of the day, senior pitchers Alex Sammons and Andrew Letellier traded zeroes in the run column until the Colonels broke the game open with a four-run spurt in the top of the sixth. A Bison miscue allowed Rodriguez to reach first base and a pair of runners to score. Barron launched a two-run homer to left field to increase the Curry lead.

An errant throw allowed the Colonels to increase the lead to 5-0 in the top of the seventh. Jackson's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the stanza helped the Bison avoid a shutout.

Rookie catcher Paul DiMascio teamed up with Letellier to mow down a Curry base runner looking to steal home in the fifth and again in the seventh.

Sammons (1-0) did not allow a run in five innings of work while scattering a pair of hits and striking out four. Junior Zach Walker fanned three batters in 1.2 innings as rookie Thomas Faucett picked up the save.

Barron and freshman Mike DeLosSantos added a pair of hits on the day for the visitors as sophomore Chris Bruno, junior Cody Jankins, sophomore Shayne McNally, Jackson and sophomore Richie Burke each recorded a two hits apiece for the Bison.
