Baseball Falls to Roger Williams, 9-4, on Day 1 of TCCC Tournament
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University baseball team picked up a 9-4 win over Curry College Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament. [Box Score]

Curry started things off with a run in the top of the first on a home run to right field by Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, Mass.), giving the Colonels a 1-0 lead. Roger Williams would respond in the bottom of the inning, with Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) notching a three-run homer of his own, bringing in John Oppenhimer (Westport, Conn.) and Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.).

In the third inning, Ben Blaisdell (Mansfield, Mass.) led off the frame with a single to center and would eventually come around to score on an RBI single by Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, Mass.), pulling the Colonels within one. Yet the Hawks would extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth on RBI hits by Oppenhimer and Porter to put RWU up 5-2.

The top of the sixth saw Curry grab two more runs to pull within one, getting back-to-back leadoff home runs by McDonald and Rodriguez. The Hawks answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs in the frame to take a comfortable five-run lead. TJ Oliver (Manchester, Vt.) picked up an RBI single before Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right field.

Over the final three innings, the Colonels were held to only one hit over the span as the Hawks prevailed with the win.

PJ Gouthro (Walpole, Mass.) earned the victory for the Hawks, pitching seven innings while allowing four runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Eric Brown (Walpole, Mass.) and Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.) each pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Porter finished 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI while Manzi was 1-for-4 with the three-run shot. Oppenhimer added a hit, an RBI, and two runs scored for RWU.

Kyle Moore (Lynn, Mass.) took the loss for Curry, giving up three runs in only one inning of work on a hit and two walks. Joe Carrig (Irvine, Calif.) came on in the second and gave up four runs in four innings on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts. McDonald went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs for Curry, while Rodriguez finished 2-for -4 with two RBI and a run. Blaisdell also added two hits and a run.

Roger Williams (22-19) will host Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. Wentworth advanced after defeating Salve Regina University 3-1 earlier in the day.
