Rodriguez Leads Baseball to Doubleheader Split With Colby-Sawyer

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College and Colby-Sawyer College split a doubleheader in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) baseball action Monday afternoon in Milton. The Chargers took the opener, 4-3. The Colonels bounced back in the nightcap, winning 6-3. Curry is now 13-19 on the season (8-12 TCCC), while Colby-Sawyer now stands at 10-18 (5-13 TCCC).

GAME ONE

In the opener, the Colonels took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when freshman Andrew Waldrip (Medford, MA) singled to right field scoring sophomore Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, MA) from second base. Rodriguez was hit by a pitch from Chargers starting pitcher, junior Ricky Perzentz (Westport, MA), and then stole second to put himself in scoring position.

The Colonels’ lead widened in the bottom of the third inning when they scored two more runs, both with two outs.  Senior Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, CA) singled to left field and junior Matt Drew (Waltham, MA) drove him in when he followed with a double to right-center. Rodriguez came up next and singled to left field scoring Drew, making the score 3-0.

In the top of the fourth, Colby-Sawyer would answer, tying the game with three runs off Curry starting pitcher Mike Hughes (Middleboro, MA).  The Chargers rallied with two outs on a double by senior Shane Hoagboon (Mayfield, NY) that bounced off the centerfield wall and cleared the bases.

In the top of the sixth, the Chargers scored what proved to be the game-winning run. Senior Evan Leary (Concord, NH) singled to left field off of Curry senior Brian Pipines (Cresskill, NJ), scoring freshman Vinny Monahan (Foxboro, MA) from second base.

The Chargers' Kevin Keith got the win in relief, finishing the game off with 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball, striking out five while improving to 2-5 on the season. Pipines also went 2 2/3 innings but gave up a run and took the loss, falling to 1-1.

In the nightcap, the Chargers jumped out early, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning off of junior Joe Carrig (Irvine, CA). Both runs scored when freshman Andy Lapple (Newtown, CT) singled to center field scoring Justin Martin (Lebanon, NH) and junior Greg Mehuron (Waitsfield, VT).

Two innings later, the Chargers extended their lead to 3-0 when senior Brandon McFadden (Dummerston, VT) rapped an RBI groundout that scored freshman Jon Wylie (Middleboro, MA).

The Chargers were held scoreless for the remainder of the game while the Colonels scored a total of six unanswered runs.

The Colonels began their scoring with three in the bottom of the fourth inning, highlighted by freshman Matt O’Neill’s (Milton, MA) RBI single, scoring junior David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, FL) and freshman Andrew Waldrip (Medford, MA).

With two on and two out and the score knotted at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Rodriguez continued his clutch play, launching a three-run home run over the centerfield wall. With the home run, Rodriquez knocked in Drew and Hawn to complete the scoring at 6-3.

After the rocky start, Carrig (3-2) settled down and went six strong innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs, while striking out three. Curry senior Chris Costa (Lynnfield, MA) came in for the final frame and notched his first save of the year.  For the Chargers, freshman P.J. Singster (Sandown, N.H) went five innings, falling to 2-3 after giving up six runs (3 earned).

Curry resumes play on Wednesday, traveling to Dudley, Mass. for a conference doubleheader with Nicholls College beginning at 2:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer is also in action on Wednesday, heading to Plymouth, N.H. to face Plymouth State University in a single non-conference game beginning at 4:00 p.m.
