Rodriguez Leads Baseball to Doubleheader Split With Salve Regina
MILTON, Mass. – Curry College split a doubleheader with Salve Regina, 8-6 and 17-0, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) baseball action Sunday afternoon in Milton. In the opener, Curry's Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, MA) hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. In the nightcap, Salve Regina’s Brandon Bursie (Smithfield, RI) threw a no-hitter. The Colonels now stand at 11-15 overall and 7-9 in the conference, while the Seahawks are 12-13 overall and 8-4 in TCCC play.

GAME ONE
Box Score

Curry put the first two runs on the board in the bottom of the second. The first run came after an error by the shortstop, allowing Matt Drew (Waltham, MA) to score, while the second run crossed the plate after David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, FL) hit an RBI single to center. Salve Regina responded in the following inning, tying the game at 2-2. Alexander Melcher (Poughkeepsie, NY) hit an RBI double to right center to score Anthony Conte (Georgetown, MA). Later in the inning, Charles Matarazzo (Montville, NJ) walked with the bases loaded to bring Melcher home.

In the fourth, the Seahawks took the lead after Devin Flynn (Auburn, ME) grounded out, allowing Conte to score. They added to their lead after Tom Glynn (Woodbridge, CT) singled to left to bring home Melcher. The Colonels recaptured the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs. The highlight of the inning came on a two-RBI double to right off the bat of Rodriguez. Salve Regina then took the lead in the following inning, scoring two additional runs.

Curry cut the lead to one in the seventh, scoring a run after Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, CA) doubled to left to score Sean Jackman (Stoughton, MA) and send the game into extra innings. After holding the visitors scoreless in the top of the eighth, Rodriguez hit a walk-off two run homer in the bottom to win the game.

Kyle Connors (Stoughton, MA) got the start for the Colonels, giving up two runs on two hits, while striking out three in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Brian Pipines (Cresskill, NJ) picked up the win, giving up no hits and no runs in one inning of work. Craig Silva (Marlborough, MA) started on the mound for the Seahawks, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out seven in seven innings pitched. Nicholas Politelli (Warwick, RI) absorbed the loss, giving up two hits and two runs in the final inning.

GAME TWO
Box Score

The Seahawks scored nine of their 17 runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run to left off the bat of Matarazzo. The scoring was spread out through the rest of the game, scoring two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Bursie gave up six walks, while striking out 13 in his seven innings on the mound. Michael Connery took the loss, giving up four runs in 1/3 of an inning pitched.

Curry returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Bridgewater State for a single nine-inning game at 3:30 pm. Salve Regina travels to UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday for a single nine-inning game with a 3:30 pm start.
