Baseball Enjoys An Offensive Explosion, Taking a Pair from NEC, 6-2 and 13-3

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College baseball swept its conference doubleheader with visiting New England College (NEC), winning the opener 6-2 and the nightcap, 13-3. The Colonels are now 7-8 overall and 3-3 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC), while the Pilgrims now stand at 3-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.

GAME ONE

Curry scored the first run of the game in the second inning, after an error by the third baseman allowed Sam Barron (Florence, MA) to cross the plate. The Colonels padded their lead in the third, adding three more runs. The first run came after Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, CA) singled to center to bring home David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, FL). Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, MA) was then hit by a pitch to take first base, moving Hawn to second. Barron immediately followed that with a double to left field to bring Hawn home. Matt Drew (Waltham, MA) then singled to right field to score Rodriguez.

NEC’s only two runs came in the fourth and fifth with two solo home runs. The first homer came off the bat of PJ Crowley (Pawcatuck, CT), while the second home run was hit by Brandon Adorno (Ft. Myers, FL). The Colonels then added to their lead in the sixth with a two-RBI double from Sean Jackman (Stoughton, MA).

Drew picked up the complete-game win, allowing just five hits and two earned runs, while striking out two in seven innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. Dalton Varnado (Groves, TX) took the loss for the Pilgrims to fall to 0-2. He gave up eight hits and four earned runs in five innings.

GAME TWO
Box Score

In the second game the Colonels got off to a quick start, scoring seven runs in the first inning. The highlight of the inning came on a two-RBI double to left field by Kyle Connors (Stoughton, MA). After Curry scored three more runs in the second, NEC scored their first run of the game in the top of the third after Crowley singled to right field to bring home Gerry Allen (Port Jefferson, NY).

In the bottom of the third, Barron hit a solo homer to center field. The Colonels then added one more run in both the fourth and fifth. The Pilgrims then plated two more runs in the sixth. Adorno scored the first run on a passed ball, while Scott Fortune’s (Shruboak, NY) single to center brought home Lucas Burgess (Bath, NH).

Matt O’Neill (Milton, MA) got the start for Curry, giving up four hits and no earned runs while recording one strikeout in three innings of work. Michael Connery (Milton, MA) picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season, giving up two hits and no runs, while striking out two in two innings pitched. Chris Wallace (Manchester, NH) absorbed the loss for ENC, giving up six hits and six earned runs in 2/3 of an inning pitched.

Curry returns to action on Sunday, visiting Endicott College in a noon doubleheader. The Pilgrims host Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
