SAAC Hosts Special Olympics Basketball Games

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted four Special Olympics Massachusetts Basketball teams in Katz Gymnasium on Sunday, February 9.

Katz Gymnasium was buzzing with over 25 SAAC volunteers helping with registration, being team liaisons, officiating, running the scorer's table, and leading cheers.

"It was great to see so many student-athlete turn out to make this a fun environment for the participants," said men's soccer junior and SAAC member Dylan Griffin (Hornell, N.Y.). Special Olympics teams included the Cushing Bulls, Cushing Celtics, Milton Quincy Bulldogs, and the Plymouth Rock Masters. These games were highly contested with one game even ending in a tie. In addition to the games, Special Olympians and SAAC members danced to the YMCA during halftime, participated in the wave that went around the gymnasium, and cheered on all the other teams during their breaks.

Women's lacrosse junior Colleen Donnelly (Atkinson, N.H.) felt "the athletes of the Special Olympics truly inspiring. Not only did we bond on the court whether it was dancing or playing basketball, but it was a time to make new friends and see the talent that they possess. It showed me that giving up a few hours of my day had changed me in ways I never expected."

"I'm so proud of the Curry College athletic teams and SAAC," said SAAC Coordinator and Men's Soccer Coach Peter Mendel. "The number of compliments our student-athletes received was fantastic. Seeing everyone enjoying the day was what it's all about."
