Guzman Ties Single-Match Kills Record as Women's Volleyball Falls to SUNY Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - Senior Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) matched the Curry College women's volleyball single-match record with 24 kills in a nail-biting five-set defeat to SUNY Cobleskill Friday evening in non-conference action at Iorio Gymnasium.

With the defeat, Curry moves to 4-12 overall on the season.

The Colonels were pushed to the brink after dropping the first two sets on Friday evening, but came alive starting in the third set. Guzman notched eight of her kills without an error in the third, while freshman Emma Hobart (Le Roy, N.Y.) posted three of her own to put Curry back within striking distance. The Colonels had a match-high attacking percentage of .344 in the third.

In the fourth, five Guzman kills and three Hobart service aces helped propel the Colonels into a winner-take-all fifth set. Senior libero Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) posted 10 of her match-high 18 kills in the fourth set.

The Fighting Tigers ran away with the fifth set to cut the Curry comeback bid short, but not before four Guzman kills to set a career-high.

It is the third time in Curry women's volleyball program history that a player has posted 24 kills. Lexi Pereira and current assistant coach Amanda Wood each posted 24 in matches in the 2019 season.

Guzman posted 14 digs to go along with her 24 kills, while Hobart finished with eight kills. Sophomore Abby Sousa (Seekonk, Mass.) and juniorJess Sullivan (Meredith, N.H.) set career-highs with 41 assists and 12 digs respectively.

Next up for the Colonels, they will stay in Upstate New York for a non-league doubleheader at Union College on Saturday. Curry will open the day at 1 p.m. with a neutral-site matchup against Manhattanville, followed by a 3 p.m. showdown against the host Garnet Chargers.
