Women's Volleyball Comes Up Short Against Rhode Island College
MILTON, Mass. - Curry College was defeated in three sets by Rhode Island College Thursday night in non-conference collegiate women's volleyball action at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-15, 25-15, 26-24.
The Colonels jumped out to an early 6-4 lead in the first set thanks to a pair of kills by Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) but the Anchorwomen quickly reestablished the lead and were able to fend off Curry for the remainder of the set.
After dropping set two the Colonels fought to keep the score close in set three, coming within one point of the lead (20-19) late in the set thanks to a four-point scoring run featuring a kill by Abby Sousa (Seekonk, Mass.) and a block from Leah Oscar-Phoenix (Westwood, Mass.) and Guzman. A service ace by Oscar-Phoenix tied the game at 22 points and later a block by Jess Sullivan (Meredith, N.H.) and Sousa tied the game at 24-24.
Ultimately the Colonels would fall short as the Anchorwomen took set three to complete the sweep.
Guzman led the Colonels offensively with seven kills while accumulating seven digs. Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) led all players with 26 digs while Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass) finished with 12.
Curry College (3-9, 0-2 CCC) returns to action on Saturday (9/30) to host a non-conference tri-match against Fitchburg State and Albertus Magnus. Match one begins at 11 a.m.
