MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's volleyball team split a tri-match Saturday afternoon at Katz Gymnasium, defeating Anna Maria in three straight sets in match one and losing to Mitchell in five sets in match two.
Match One: Curry 3 - Anna Maria 0 (25-20, 28-26, 25-22)
In set one of the opening match, Curry took a five-point lead (12-7) after a service ace by Leah Oscar-Phoenix (Westwood, Mass.). The Colonels won the first set after scoring the last three points of the set, including another service ace from Emma St. Cyr (Dover, N.H.).
After Curry took a three-point lead (7-4) early in the second set, Anna Maria went on a four-point scoring run to take the lead from the Colonels. Later, a kill by Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) and a service ace from Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) put Curry back in front. After going back and forth late in the set, the Colonels closed out the second with a kill by Morgan Kramer (Brightwaters, N.Y.) and a bad set from the AMCATS.
The third set went back and forth until Curry managed to pull away from the visitors, after a four-point scoring stretch (13-9) bookended by kills from Oscar-Phoenix and Guzman. The Colonels closed out the set with a block by Oscar-Phoenix to win the match.
Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) led all players with nine kills, while Guzman finished with eight kills and 10 digs. Fraine had 12 digs, while Abby Sousa finished with 16 assists.
Match Two: Mitchell 3 - Curry 2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-9, 25-16, 15-7)
Curry came out hot in match two, scoring the first three points of the set before Mitchell went on a six-point run. The Mariners kept the pressure on, extending their lead to nine (18-9). The Colonels battled back, scoring nine straight, with a block by Matheson and Oscar-Phoenix tying the set at 18-18. The block party continued as a solo block by Guzman put the home team ahead, while another solo block by Natalie Cloutier (Litchfield, N.H.) set up match point. Curry completed the comeback with a kill by Phoebe Savas (Framingham, Mass.) to win the set.
The Colonels continued their success in the second set, starting off with an 8-1 run, including two straight service aces by Oscar-Phoenix. Anna Maria managed to fight its way back into the match, coming within two points of the lead (13-11). Three straight points for the Colonels extended the lead and put the set out of reach for the visitors.
Mitchell fought back in sets three and four, forcing a deciding fifth set that ended with a Mariners victory.
Guzman led Curry with 12 kills and 15 digs, while Matheson added 10 kills and 20 digs. Sousa finished with 19 assists and 15 digs
Curry College (1-1) returns to action in a home matchup against Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday (9/6) beginning at 6 p.m.
