Colonels Stopped by Saints

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Volleyball team was defeated by non-conference opponent Emmanuel College 3-0 Thursday evening in their home opener in Katz Gymnasium.

The Colonels fell to the Saints of Emmanuel College 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 22-25).

With the losses, Curry moves forward with a record of 3-8, 0-1 (CCC).

The first set saw a constant battle between the two sides, however, the visiting Saints took over the lead following a 12-12 tie in the first set. A 10-3 scoring run in favor of the visitors brought the score to 22-15 late in the first set. A service error by the visitors and a service ace from Curry senior Brooke Reissfelder (Biddeford, Maine) brought the Colonels right back into the action. Curry's Lauryn Gedeon (Holbrook, Mass.) marked a kill paired with a service ace by Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) to close the Saints' lead to just three points, 23-20. The visitors would find the final two points in the set to take the one-set lead over the Colonels.

Albertus Magnus began the second set on a 16-6 scoring run to take an early lead. The visitors held the ten-point lead until a flurry of attack errors prompted the Emmanuel coaching staff to take a timeout with the score now 16-11. Multiple kills from Curry senior Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) kept the Colonels alive, now down just five in the set. Emmanuel College would benefit from a service ace of their own partnered with a couple of errors on the Colonels' side to take the second set victory.

The visitors would again take a quick lead, pushing forth a 9-4 lead before Curry elected to take a timeout. A service ace from Curry's Amber Buttaro (Tewksbury, Mass.) and a kill by Leah Oscar-Phoenix (Westwood, Mass.) contributed to the Colonels bringing the score to 13-11. The Colonels would fight back against the visiting Saints, bringing the score to 23-22 before Emmanuel would close out the contest on a service ace, taking the match by a final set score of 3-0.

The Colonels were led by Lauren Guzman (9 kills, 7 digs), Sonja Matheson (6 kills, 11 digs), and Brooke Reissfelder (16 assists, 5 digs).

The Colonels will be back on the hardwood Wednesday as they hit the road to face Nichols College to continue conference action at 7 PM.
