Women's Volleyball Falls Short Against Emmanuel
The Curry College women's volleyball team dropped its fourth consecutive match on Thursday evening, falling 3-1 to Emmanuel College in non-conference action at Andy Yosinoff Court.
BOSTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's volleyball team dropped its fourth consecutive match on Thursday evening, falling 3-1 to Emmanuel College in non-conference action at Andy Yosinoff Court. Set scores were 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23.
With the win, Emmanuel improves to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the GNAC. Curry falls to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the CCC.
With the opening set tied 10-10, the Saints used an 8-2 run to separate themselves from the Colonels. Curry got as close as 22-19 but the last three points went to Emmanuel, capped off by a kill from sophomore Sasha Hyacinthe (Stoughton, Mass.), as they won the first set, 25-19.
In the second set, Curry controlled the action early, leading by as many as four points on multiple occasions. The Saints fought their way back to ties of 16-16 and 20-20, but the Colonels regained the control with the help of three kills late in the set by senior Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan) to claim a 25-22 set victory.
The third featured another close set between the Saints and Colonels, with the teams battling to a 17-17 tie. Emmanuel claimed the next six points, looking poised to take the set win, but Curry fought back with four straight points of their own. The Saints managed to hold on, claiming the final two points in the 25-21 set win.
In the fourth set, the Saints were out fast to an early three-point lead, but Curry quickly turned the momentum, going on a 10-2 run to grab a 15-10 lead. The Saints came roaring back with the next six points as the two sides battled for momentum until the end of the third. Emmanuel sophomore Seana Phillips (Middleboro, Mass.) came through with the final kill of the evening, giving the Saints the 25-23 set win.
Phillips finished with a season-high 11 kills for the Saints, including a .400 attack percentage on the floor. Senior Caitlin Tannian (Reading, Mass.) added a career-high 20 digs while chipping in six kills.
Curry junior Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) had a match-high 14 kills while adding 13 digs for the double-double. Wood ended the four-set match with 13 kills on .273 hitting from the floor.
Up next, Emmanuel heads north for a Saturday tri-match against St. Joseph's College and UMaine at Fort Kent. Curry heads back home for a Saturday match against Fitchburg State with first serve set for 11:00 a.m.
