Women’s Tennis Falls in Rain-Shortened Contest

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team lost 5-0 to Western New England (WNE) this afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match. With the loss, the Colonels sink to 0-13 overall with a 0-6 mark in the CCC. The Golden Bears improve to 5-3 overall and even up in conference play at 3-3.

At first doubles, Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) and Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) beat Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) and Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) by a score of 8-3. Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) and Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) edged out Natalie Valvo (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) at second, 8-7 (7-3). The Golden Bears took third doubles by default.

Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) bested Kayla Connors (Brockton, Mass.) at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-0, while the Golden Bears secured the match by taking sixth singles by default. A pair of singles were left unfinished as LaPress held a 2-1 lead over Wiernusz at first and Schrader had a 5-0 edge over Daigle at second. Third and fourth singles were left not started, as the match was called due to the weather.

Curry will continue their schedule tomorrow as they travel to face Salem State at 3:30 p.m. WNE will wrap up their conference schedule with a 12:00 p.m. home match against the Endicott Gulls on Saturday, October 5.
