Leopards Defeat Women’s Tennis in CCC Play

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team lost a home match to the Wentworth Institute of Technology, a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opponent, on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Leopards improve to 3-5 overall with a 1-3 CCC record. The Colonels sink to 0-10 and have dropped their first four league matches.

At first doubles, Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and Morgan Collins (Warwick, R.I.) defeated Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) and Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) by a score of 8-6. Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) and Olivia DeLuca (Dunstable, Mass.) won second doubles 8-5 over Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) and Natalie Valvo (Hermosa Beach, Calif.). The Leopards took third doubles by default.

After a pair of closely contested doubles matches, Wentworth continued to rack up points in singles play. Sollecito topped Wiernusz 6-1, 6-0 at first. McGibbon edged out Valvo 6-4, 6-1 at third. At fourth, Collins beat Merrill by scores of 6-1, 6-3, while Hannah Erickson (Columbia, Conn.) outlasted Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 in a tight super tiebreaker at fifth. Daigle collected the lone Colonel point of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over DeLuca at second, but the Leopards completed their victory by taking sixth singles by default.

The Leopards will get back to action on Thursday, September 26 as they travel to face Lesley at 4:30 p.m. at Harvard University. The Colonels resume play with another home match tomorrow, as they welcome in the Simmons Sharks for a 3:30 p.m. start.
