Women's Tennis Knocked Out of TCCC Tournament After 5-0 Loss at Salve Regina
NEWPORT, R.I. - No. 6 seed Curry College gave No. 3 seed Salve Regina University all it could handle in doubles play before falling 5-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) women's tennis quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon in Newport. Salve Regina improved to 10-2 overall in advancing to the conference semi-finals, while Curry fell to 9-7.
The Seahawks’ Ana Gwozdz and Erin Phillips built a 7-2 advantage at No. 1 doubles before hanging on for an 8-5 win against Curry’s freshman duo of Lauren Chuha and Emily Mongello. Senior Elise Jones paired with freshman Jessica Moore for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles against another pair of Colonels’ rookies, Devin Curley and Elizabeth Zarkades.
Valerie Leso and Nichols Stevens trailed 5-2 in their match at No. 2 doubles against Curry’s Kate Johnson and Megan Mulrooney, rallied to take an 8-7 lead, then needed a tiebreak to decide the match. The Seahawk pair won the first four points of the tiebreak and split the remaining six for a 7-3 score.The win gave Salve Regina three points heading into singles competition.
Sophomore Karlee Walther put the fourth point on the board by besting Curley, 6-1,6-0, at No. 6 singles. Moore followed with the clinching victory (6-1,6-2) at No. 4 singles over Chuha.
Curry and Salve Regina will both compete in the New England Women's Invitational Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) this coming weekend at Amherst, Mt. Holyoke and Smith Colleges,
