September 29, 2010
BEVERLY, Mass. – Curry College won two of three doubles matches, but host Endicott rallied in singles play to edge the Colonels, 5-4, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) women’s tennis action on Wednesday. The Gulls improved to 7-1 in conference, 7-3 overall, while Curry dropped to 6-4 (4-4 TCCC).
The final two crucial matches of the day were at number five and number one singles as both contests contributed to an Endicott victory over Curry. In the number five singles match, Gulls’ sophomore Ashley Sullivan (Concord, N.H.) earned a straight-set victory over Colonels’ opponent Kathleen Rush (Waterbury, Conn.) by the score of 7-5, 6-3. Sullivan’s victory tied the match up at 4-4.
The last match to finish up at number one singles was a three-set thriller between Endicott’s Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.) and Curry’s Megan Mulrooney (South Boston, Mass.). Cioffi dropped the first set 5-7 before storming back to win set two in convincing fashion 6-1. The two competitors exchanged points throughout the third and final set, but Cioffi outlasted her opponent 6-4 for the hard-fought win.
In other singles play, Colonels’ freshman Emily Mongello (Plymouth, Mass.) won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in number two singles and fellow freshman Lauren Chuha (Reading, Mass.) claimed the only other Curry victory in singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the number four spot.
Endicott’s Laura MacLeod (Mashpee, Mass.) and Gina Pinciaro (Beverly, Mass.) each won their respective matches at number three and number six singles in straight sets. MacLeod won 6-3, 6-2 and Pinciaro won 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Curry battled hard to defeat Endicott’s number one and number two doubles combinations. Mongello and Chuha took down Cioffi and Annis 8-6 in number one doubles. Mulrooney and partner Kate Johnson (Beverly, Mass.) also won 8-6 at number two doubles. The only Gulls triumph was at number three doubles as MacLeod and Kerri Dunn (Middleton, Mass.) took down Elizabeth Zarkades (Beverly, Mass.) and Lauren Maloney (Feeding Hills, Mass.) 8-4.
Endicott will host TCCC rival Roger Williams as part of Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, October 2 at 12:00 pm. Curry hosts non-conference opponent Salem State University tomorrow starting at 3:30 pm. (Release courtesy of Endicott Sports Information)
