Women's Soccer Downed by Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Curry College women's soccer team struggled for offense on Thursday evening, falling to Worcester State University by a final score of 2-0 at John F. Coughlin Field.

The Lancers improve to 4-3-1 on the season as Curry drops to 3-4.

The first half was closely contested, with both teams creating offense and getting some strong shots on goal. Curry's Shannon Folan (Hudson, Mass.) made a great move to get herself into scoring position before the Lancers' Allie Marrier stepped in to interrupt the play. Shortly after, Worcester State's Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) fed Megan Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass.) on a cross that couldn't be completed. At halftime, Curry led the shot count 7-3 but both teams were unable to score in the first half.

Curry resisted the Lancer offense, with goalkeeper Hannah Correa (Carver, Mass.) recording 3 of her 4 saves in the second half. But after a scoreless first half, Gurlitz found the net with 28:51 left in the game. The goal was assisted by Hailey Skowronski (Douglas, Mass.) who followed up with a goal of her own in the closing minutes to secure a Lancer victory.

Senior goalkeeper Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) held down the fort with 5 saves on the night. Spellman made an impressive save on a potential game-tying shot in the 63rd minute off the boot of Maddie Resendes (Coventry, R.I.).

Next up, Curry College will host Roger Williams on Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest. The Lancers return to action on Saturday at Fitchburg State. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
