Women's Soccer Slides Past Rhode Island College

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's soccer team took care of Rhode Island College by a final score of 4-1 on Wednesday evening at a rainy Katz Field.

With the win, Curry opens the season with a record of 1-0. Rhode Island College drops to 0-1.

Junior Brooke Bonneau (Claremont, N.H.) opened the scoring with Curry's first goal of the 2021 season in the 19th minute. The goal held up as the only tally of the half, as the Colonels took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Curry doubled its lead in the 64th minute when sophomore Sydney Dewhurst (East Bridgewater, Mass.) nodded home a McKenna Reid (Irvine, Calif.) corner kick.

Rhode Island College ended the shutout bid of Curry freshman goalkeeper Stella Schofield (Marshfield, Mass.) with a 78th minute goal from Gabrielle McGowan to cut the score to 2-1, but the drama was short-lived. Just 51 seconds after McGowan's marker, senior Samantha Borges (Somerset, Mass.) curled a shot around the Rhode Island College keeper and into the bottom corner of the cage to push the lead to 3-1. Freshman Brooke Sullivan (Berkley, Mass.) assisted on Borges' insurance tally.

Reid found Dewhurst for a carbon copy of the 64th-minute goal off a corner in the 87th minute to give the game its final score of 4-1.

Schofield made two saves in her first collegiate win for the Colonels. Reagan Kerecz was sharp in net for Rhode Island College, making 14 stops in the losing effort.

Curry will be back in action on Saturday with a road trip to Wellesley. Kick-off is slated for 12 p.m.
