Western New England Slips Past Women's Soccer on Senior Day

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback to Western New England University on Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Walter M. Katz Field on Senior Day. Prior to the match, the program honored its two senior captains, Courtney Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) and Megan Ladner (Bourne, Mass.) in a special pre-match ceremony.

The Golden Bears trailed 1-0 at intermission but scored twice in the second half to improve to 8-9-2 overall (4-3-1 CCC). Junior Christina Sordi (Bethlehem, Conn.) tied the game in the 55th minute to set the stage for freshman Summer Hathaway (Colchester, Vt.), who tacked on the game-winner in the 64th. Sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Murphy (Halifax, Mass.) made the margin stand to record her third win of the year.

Curry struck first in the 38th minute when junior Tayla Randall (Walpole, Mass.) scored off of a free-kick just over midfield about 55 yards out from freshman Jessica Gooch (Dracut, Mass.). The ball found Randall in front of the goal and she put one past Murphy for her team-leading 13th goal of the season to give the Colonels the 1-0 advantage.

Western New England equalized early in the second half when sophomore Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) slipped a pass through Curry's backline off a free kick that initially connected with junior Lauren Leblanc (Belchertown, Mass.) for a shot. The attempt was saved by Curry freshman goalkeeper Oliver Hutchinson (Scituate, Mass.), but the ball found Sordi in front of the net to finish off the strike to knot the match at one with her third marker of the year.

The Golden Bears tallied the eventual game-winner in the 64th minute as Bruehwiler served in a ball off a corner. The attempt off the corner was punched out by Hutchinson, but ultimately found its way to Hathaway. She deposited the shot in the back of the net for her third goal on the season and the 2-1 final.

Western New England held an 18-17 advantage in total shots. Both Murphy and Hutchinson finished with six saves apiece.

Curry (6-12-1 overall, 1-6-1 CCC) concludes the season with the loss. Western New England has qualified for the CCC Championship Tournament and will await the announcement tomorrow night for its next opponent.
