MILTON, Mass. – Curry College women's soccer head coach Brigi Palatino was selected to attend the 2019 Coaches Workshop hosted by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) from May 15-18. The purpose of the USMC Recruiting Command Coaches Workshop is to provide a glimpse into the USMC. Approximately 50 coaches from across the United States were selected to attend the workshop and were given the opportunity to learn how Marine Officers are recruited, screened, and developed into leaders. The workshop took place on the USMC base in Quantico, Virginia. Additionally, the workshop assisted coaches in gaining an understanding of Marine Corps' leadership traits, principles and small unit leadership and allows coaches to utilize these sessions to foster a culture of leadership with their respective student-athletes and programs.
Some of the events the coaches participated in were:
Morning PT (physical training)
Presentation on Leadership Development by Michelle Chadwick
Discussion on "Coaching and Leadership" by Sean Braziel
Leadership Reaction Course
Obstacle Course
Martial Arts Demo by Joseph Shusko
Ethics Class
8th Street and I parade
Marine Corps Museum
During the Fall of 2018, Captain Bridgett Soares spoke with our Colonel Troop about her journey as a walk-on Division II student-athlete at LIU Post for their women's lacrosse program. Her inspiring story of having the strength to be resilient when faced with adversity earned her a starting spot and captainship to lead a team to two national championships. Captain Soares talks the talk and walks the walk of true honor, courage, and commitment and Coach Palatino am thrilled for her to return back to continue workshops with our Curry College Colonel Troop.
"I initially did not know what to expect going into the USMC Coaches Workshop and after the experience," said Palatino. "I feel very blessed to have been given the opportunity to learn from such remarkable men and women serving our country and from the fellow coaches who attended. What resonated with me the most was how ingrained the core values of honor, courage and commitment were throughout everything the USMC does, whether it was 6 a.m. morning physical training or leadership workshops, those core values radiated. I want to thank Captain Bridgett Soares for nominating me and because of her I have grown stronger (physically and mentally) and I will be able to use what I have learned from the experience with the Curry College Colonel Troop to foster and empower troop leaders."
