Women's Soccer Notches a 2-0 Victory Over Fitchburg State

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College defeated visiting Fitchburg State, 2-0, on Tuesday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win the Colonels improve to 6-2 overall while the Falcons fall to 1-6 on the season.

Freshman Julianna Petrucelli (Milford, Conn.) netted her first collegiate goal and gave the Colonels a 1-0 lead that held up heading into break.  At the 21:54 minute mark, sophomore Korinna Tsonis (No. Dartmouth, Mass.) headed a pass to Petrucelli who ripped the ball into to the top right corner of the net past the Falcons senior goaltender Kelsey Ford (Franconia, N.H.).  Fitchburg had some nice chances to tie the match and held a slight 7-6 advantage in shots, but sophomore goaltender Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) was solid between the pipes making four stops to hold the Falcons scoreless.

The Falcons outshot the Colonels 7-6 in the opening stanza with both keepers make four saves.  The teams also had a corner kick a piece.

Fitchburg came out strong to start the second half.  The Falcons had three strikes in the first four minutes, including a corner kick that just went wide of the net.  Stott was forced to make two saves, one diving after senior Abbey Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) took a blast from inside the 18-yard box.  Over the next ten minutes the Colonels kept possession of the ball in the Falcons defensive zone.  Curry had three shots, two saved by Ford and one blocked by senior defender Sarah Haley (Holbrook, Mass.). The Colonels also had three corner kicks.  Curry worked hard offensively to extend their lead but couldn't finish.  With 21:55 remaining to play the squad netted their second and final tally of the night.  Senior Danielle Kent (Pocasset, Mass.) sent a through pass to Tsonis who went one-on-one with Ford.  Ford came out to shutdown Tsonis but before she could meet her, the sophomore placed the ball low into the back of the net.  Fitchburg kept the pressure on over the remaining minutes in regulation trying to get on the board.  The Falcons outshot the Colonels 4-3 but fell short on scoring giving Stott her fifth shutout on the season.

The Colonels finished with 13 shots and five corner kicks.  The Falcons had 14 shots and three corners.

Stott earned the win in net with nine saves.  Ford took the loss in net for Fitchburg State coming up with eight stops.

Curry returns to action on Saturday, September 27 when they travel to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Nichols College in a 2:00 p.m. start.  Fitchburg hosts Nichols College on Thursday, September 25 for a 7:30 p.m. start.
