Women's Soccer Earns First Win of Season in a 1-0 Shutout at Rhode Island College

Providence, R.I.-A goal by junior forward Taylor Evans (Middleton, MA) in the 25th minute was the lone tally in a Curry College, 1-0, victory over Rhode Island College on Tuesday evening at the RIC Soccer Field.

After a sluggish first half, RIC (1-1) generated numerous opportunities during the second stanza, which included a shot by sophomore Jaclyn Greenman (Waterford, CT) that nearly tied the contest in the 67th minute, but sailed just over the crossbar.

The Anchorwomen started the game strong when junior Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, RI) snapped a header on goal in the third minute, which was stopped by CC sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, MA). It was eight minutes before the Anchorwomen recorded another shot as the Colonels (1-0) ramped up the tempo and put three shots just wide in that time. Following a beautiful through ball by sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, MA), Evans corralled the pass, broke in from the top left of the 18-yard box and belted home her first of the season.

The second half saw Anchorwomen goalie Audrey Maia (Norton, MA) stymie the Colonels, stopping all six of the shots she faced in the stanza. Freshman midfielder Stephanie Ricci (Smithfield, RI) gave the Anchorwomen their best chance of the game with a quick re-direct from eight yards out that was corralled by Stott in the 89th minute. It would be the last chance for RIC as Curry kept the ball on the edge of the field for the remainder of the contest to run out the clock.

Stott picked up the win (1-0) for the Colonels by posting seven saves in the shutout. Maia (1-1) stopped 10 of 11 for the Anchorwomen as they fall to 1-1 on the season.

Curry held the advantage in shots (23-13) and corner kicks (7-2). The Colonels attempted numerous breakaway chances in the tilt and were whistled for nine offsides infractions.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Worcester State on Saturday, Sept. 6.  Curry hosts Mount Ida on Thursday, Sept. 4. (Game recap courtesy of Rhode Island College)
