Women's Soccer Absorbs a 3-0 Loss at the University of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's soccer team claimed a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 28), defeating visiting Curry College by a 3-0 margin at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Big Blue (5-4-1) improves to 2-0-1 in league outings with a seventh consecutive triumph over the Colonels. Curry falls back to 5-5-0 overall, 1-2-0 in CCC action.

The Nor'easters controlled play for most of the day, finishing with a 23-8 advantage in shots and 5-0 edge in corners.

Junior Jayne Kelly opened the scoring for UNE in the 8th minute, chasing down a long chip-pass from senior Morgan Humphreys and flicking the ball past the on-rushing goalie.

Curry saw its best opportunity denied by Big Blue first-year netminder Brielle Robinson, who dove near-post to stop a try by Colonels sophomore Taylor Evans in the 43rd minute.

On the other end of the field, UNE junior Kaitlyn Hall put in a shot off the goalie's fingers as time expired in the 1st half to double the cushion for the hosts. First-year Jessica Meader assisted on the play.

Just a few minutes in the 2nd frame, senior Katy Marshall nearly got into the scoring column on a lengthy try from straight away, but Curry senior Hayley Lorge jumped up just in time to touch it over the crossbar.

Marshall would eventually cap the scoring in the 81st minute, though, when the midfielder placed a penalty kick into the upper left corner.

Robinson needed to make just three saves for her second shutout victory in as many starts. Lorge ended with 11 stops for the Colonels, who take on Rivier College in non-league action on Monday.

The Nor'easter have a week off before returning to the pitch next Saturday (Oct. 5) for a road contest against Salve Regina University.
