Women's Soccer Edges Emmanuel College, 3-2

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team defeated the visiting Saints of Emmanuel College, 3-2 on Thursday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field.  With the win the Colonels improve to 5-1 overall.  The Saints fell to 2-5-1 on the season.

Emmanuel was first to get on the board just 13:20 into the opening frame.  The Saints earned a corner kick which was taken by senior Darcey Sullivan (Dalton, Mass.).  Sullivan sent the ball into the middle of the 18-yard box.  Teammate senior Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) was able to get a touch on it and one-timed it into the back of the net past Curry's senior goaltender Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.).  Just 8:21 minutes later the Colonels netted their first of the night to tie the game.  Sophomore Felicia Vieira (Bristol, R.I.) came off the bench and wasn't in for more than 30 seconds before she won a ball over the 20-yard line and got the assist.  Vieira sent a pass to freshman Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) who shot into the lower left corner of the net past Emmanuel's sophomore goaltender Brenna Smith (Watagh, N.Y.).

After the first half, Curry had 11 shots, six saves, four fouls and four corner kicks.  Emmanuel had 10 shots, four saves, five fouls and one corner kick.

The Saints started the second half strong taking four shots to the Colonels two in the first six minutes of play.  Emmanuel kept the play going in their offensive end for the first 10 minutes.  The Colonels got two shots off during that time one resulting in a goal to take the 2-1 lead.  The goal came at the 34:02 minute mark by Lima.  Lima manauvered around an Emmanuel defender and sent a high ball over the head of Smith.  Less than two minutes left the Saints evened the score when Sullivan sent a through pass to junior Kelsie Dumas (Dalton, Mass.). Dumas was wide open in front of the net and needed to just tap the ball low into the back for the tally.  The score remained tied at two and looked as though it would be headed into overtime.  Lima however netted the game-winner and her second hat trick of the season when she was awarded a PK with two minutes showing on the clock.  Emmanuel caused a foul inside the box which allowed for Curry to take a penalty kick.  Lima was chosen to take it and perfectly placed the ball into the lower left corner of the net.  The Saints had two big chances with under 30 seconds to play to tie the match but Lorge made two outstanding saves to allow Curry their fifth win on the year.

Curry finished with 18 shots, four corners and 10 fouls.  Emmanuel ended with 29 shots, four corners and 10 fouls.

Lorge made a career-high 16 saves in net for the win. Smith made six saves in the loss.

The Colonels are next in action when they host Eastern Nazarene on Saturday, September 21 for an 11:00 a.m. match. Emmanuel College will host Johnson & Wales on Saturday, September 21 for a 3:00 pm game.
