Women's Soccer Defeats Rhode Island College, 3-1, in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team defeated the visiting Anchormen of Rhode Island College, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in their season opener.  The Colonels improve to 1-0 overall.  The Anchormen fall to 0-1 on the season.
 
Both teams came out strong in the first half of play, but the Colonel's managed to outshoot the Anchormen, 8-3.  Each goalkeeper played solid between the pipes to keep the game scoreless heading into the second half.   

The second half saw the Colonels score first.  Just 6:03 into the frame freshman Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal unassisted.  Just 6:12 minutes later R.I.C. tied the game at one apiece when sophomore midfielder Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, R.I.) one-timed the ball into the lower corner of the net past Curry's netminder senior Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.).  The game-winning goal came at the 67:34 minute mark when sophomore Taylor Evans (Middleton, Mass.) headed the ball over the Anchormen's junior goaltender, Audrey Maia (Norton, Mass.).  Evans received a pass from junior Danielle Kent (Bourne, Mass.) who earned the assist.  The Colonels were able to put one more up before the end of the game.  With 8:32 remaining to play, senior captain Brittney McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) netted her first of the season when she received a pass from freshman Briana Fitzsimmons (East Haven, Conn.).

Curry finished with 16 shots, six on net, five corners and four fouls.  Rhode Island College ended with six shots, nine on goal, zero corners and eight fouls. 

Lorge made three saves in net for the Colonels in the win.  Maia made nine saves for the Anchormen in the loss. 

The Colonel's will travel to Johnson State College on Saturday, September 7 for a 1:00 pm match. Rhode Island College will travel to Roger Williams University on Tuesday, September 3 for a 4:00 pm game.
