McLaughlin Nets Two Goals as the Women's Soccer Team Defeats Fitchburg State, 3-1

MILTON, Mass. – Junior Brittney McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) netted two goals as Curry College defeated Fitchburg State, 3-1 in non-conference women’s soccer action on Tuesday evening.

With the win the Colonels improve to 4-3-1 overall while the Falcons fell to 1-8.

In the opening period, Curry raced out to an early lead just 53 seconds into the contest as senior Brooke Moore (Bellingham, Mass.) connected for her first goal of the season.  Moore fired a shot inside the near post to put the Colonels up 1-0. Fitchburg State quickly knotted the score at one apiece nearly two minutes later when junior Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass.) took a feed from freshman Nicole Perez (Jamestown, R.I.) and deposited the ball into back the net.

The Colonels held a slight advantage in shots at 15-11. The teams were even in corner kicks at two.  The Falcons made eight saves while Curry stopped four.

In the second stanza, the Colonels regained the lead in the 65th minute as McLaughlin notched her second tally for the 2-1 advantage. Junior Alayna Coakley (Grafton, Mass.) was credited with the assist.  McLaughlin had just missed a penalty kick minutes before when the ball hit off the top post.  Curry upped its lead less than seven minutes later as McLaughlin found the back of the net for her second marker of the game off a feed from sophomore Danielle Kent (Pocassett, Mass.) resulting in the 3-1 final.

Throughout the match, Curry College out shot Fitchburg State 24-22, while the Falcons held a narrow 6-4 margin in corner kicks.

Between the pipes, senior Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) made four saves and allowed Fitchburg’s lone goal in 45 minutes of play.  Junior Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.) stopped five second half shots for the Colonels.  Junior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass.) made 13 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons.
