Women's Soccer Edged, 2-1, by Visiting Salem State
MILTON, Mass.- Salem State University defeated Curry College, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday in Milton. With the win, the Vikings improve to 2-2-1 overall. The Colonels fell to 1-4 overall.
Curry was the first to get on the board just 3:06 into the game. Sophomore Brittany McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) sent a pass from the corner of the field that connected with sophomore Alayna Coakley (Grafton, Mass.) for her team’s lone goal. The Colonels held off the Vikings for the remainder of the period to head into the second half with a 1-0 lead. Shots were close to even in the half with Salem having just one more than the Curry. The Vikings had 12 while the Colonels had 11. Curry’s goaltender, sophomore Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.) made nine stops in the half, while Salem’s senior Leah Potcner (Wilmington, Mass.) made 7.
The Vikings started to pressure the Colonels right off the whistle in the start of the second frame. Lorge made some great saves to try and hold on to the 1-0 lead, but at the 21:40 mark Salem got their first goal of the evening. The Vikings had a corner kick from sophomore Bianca Gallo (Peabody, Mass.) that deflected off a Colonel defender which led to the goal. Salem kept the pressure on the Curry defense and had seven corner kicks, 10 total, and eventually scored the game-winner with just 2:43 left to play. Freshman Kaitlyn Krish (Rockland, Mass.) scored outside the 18-yard box when teammate sophomore Casey Connelly (Nahant, Mass.) assisted. The Colonels got two more shots off at the end of the game but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Salem ended with 29 total shots, 21 on goal and 10 corner kicks. Curry finished with 16 shots, 12 on goal and just two corner kicks.
Potcner, who made 11 saves, earned the win in net for the Vikings. Lorge finished with 19 saves in the loss.
The Colonels will host Endicott on Saturday, September 13, for a 1:30 p.m. contest. Salem State hosts Gordon College on September 15 for a 7:00 p.m. game start.
