Women's Soccer Falls to University of New England, 7-1, in First Conference Game of Season

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) tallied two goals and two assists to help lead the University of New England to a 7-1 victory over Curry College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Junior Lauren Blaisdell (Scarborough, Maine) got things started for UNE (3-0, 1-0 CCC) in the 3rd minute with an unassisted score after cutting back around a defender, and Big Blue never looked back.

Blaisdell made it 2-0 in the 25th minute, and senior Sarah Richardson (Rochester, N.H.) upped the margin to three at the 28:22 mark. Caron registered an assist on both goals, then found her way into the scoring column with 30:43 gone, cashing in on pass from sophomore Katy Marshall (Eliot, Maine).

The Nor'easters took the four-goal cushion into halftime, before Curry sent in its lone score of the contest with 2:30 elapsed in the second frame. Sophomore Brittney McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) recorded the goal and junior Kelly Howe (Walton, Neb.) the assist.

Marshall set-up Caron for her second of the game in the 57th minute, while first-years Marlie Mochamer (Farmington, Maine) and Rachel McDevitt (Underhill, Vt.) provided the game's final score with goals in the 77th and 79th minutes, respectively. Senior Alice Read (Auburn, Maine) notched an assist on UNE's last two goals.

For the match, the Nor'easters racked up a 30-8 advantage in shot attempts.

UNE senior goalie Jess Woodworth (Concord, N.H.) played nearly 74 minutes to make three saves, before giving way to first-year Sarah Papapietro (Bonita, Calif.).

For the Colonels (1-3, 0-1), junior Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) turned away seven shots and surrendered five goals in 69-plus minutes of action. Sophomore Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.) finished the rest, posting three saves.

Big Blue is set to visit Thomas College on Monday (4 p.m.), while Curry is back in action Tuesday with a home match against Salem State University (7 p.m.).
