Women's Soccer Falls to UMass Dartmouth, 4-2

MILTON, Mass.- UMass Dartmouth defeated Curry College, 4-2, in non-conference women's soccer action on Saturday in Milton.  With the win, the Corsairs improve to 2-0 overall.  The Colonels fall to 0-2 overall. 

UMass Dartmouth held the lead in shots in the first half.  The Corsair’s outshot the Colonels’s, 17-6.  Out of the 17 shots, 10 landed on net.  Junior goalkeeper Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) made nine saves to hold UMass Dartmouth to just one goal.  Sophomore Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, Mass.) scored the unassisted goal for the Corsairs.  Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Borges (Somerset, Mass.) made four saves in net for her team to keep Curry scoreless.

UMass Dartmouth came out strong in the second frame, scoring the first goal just 3:41 into the half.  Junior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, Mass.) scored on a through pass from freshman Shelby Friedland (New bedford, Mass.).  Just 1:23 minutes later junior Kelly Howe (Walton, Neb.) scored off an assist by senior Suzanne Jensen (Framingham, Mass.).  The goal cut the lead to just one, but the Corsairs scored two goals 38 seconds a part.  Friedland scored the first of the two after her team won the kick off.  Jonasson scored her second goal 25 seconds later when junior Danielle Gauvin ( Fall River, Mass.) crossed the ball from the corner.  The Colones were able to get one more score before the end of the game.  Sophomore Brittany McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) scored her first goal of the year off an assist from Howe.

UMass Dartmouth outshot the Colonels, 26-15.  Curry's defense held the Corsairs to just six shots in the second compared to the 17 in the first.  The Colonels had nine shots in the second.  UMass Dartmouth also had 10 offside calls to Curry's one. 

Borges, who made eight saves, earned the win in net for the Corsairs. Hardy finished with 13 saves in the loss.

The Colonels will host Framingham State University on Wednesday, September 7,  for a 4:30 p.m. contest. UMass Dartmouth hosts Salve Regina on September 6 with a 7:00 p.m. game start.
