McLaughlin Scores Gamewinner in Double Overtime to Defeat TCCC Rival Gordon College 2-1

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College defeated Gordon College 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday in Milton.  With the win the Colonels improve to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Fighting Scots fell to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the TCCC. 

Curry College was the first to get on the board when Gordon College’s defender sophomore Rachel Ashley (Lowville, NY) committed a foul in the box.  Junior Suzanne Jensen (Framingham, MA) was awarded a penalty kick at the 32:27 mark.  Jensen placed the ball in the bottom right corner of the net to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.  The team’s traded shots on goal for the rest of the half but the score remained in favor of Curry.

The Fighting Scots controlled the beginning of the second half and continued to put pressure on the Colonels defense and sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, MA) before getting their first goal of the game.  At the 56:25 mark, senior midfielder Kelly Donlan (Burlington, CT) scored off a Hardy rebound to tie the game.  Strong play from both goalkeepers kept the teams scoreless for the rest of the half.

Curry outshot Gordon 6-0 in overtime with four of those shots coming in the first ten minutes.  The Colonels got two more shots in the second overtime before freshman Brittney McLaughlin (Wilmington, MA) scored on a breakaway with just three minutes left to play. 

The Colonels outshot the Fighting Scots 25-15.    

In net for Gordon was freshman Kari Christenson (Standish, MA) who made 10 saves in the loss.  In net for Curry was Hardy who made eight saves for the win.

The Colonels will travel to Salve Regina University on Tuesday, October 5 for a 6:30 p.m. contest. Gordon hosts Endicott on Tuesday, October 5 for a 3:30 p.m. game start.
