Velezis Scores Game Winner as Women's Soccer Defeats Emerson College 3-2 in Overtime

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College defeated Emerson College 3-2 in sudden death overtime on Saturday in Milton.  With the win the Colonels improve to 1-1 overall.  The Lions fall to 0-1 overall.

Curry put the Colonels up by one early into the game when senior midfielder Caitlin McKinney (Manchester, NH) scored off a direct kick caused by an Emerson foul.  The Colonels controlled most of the half but with 1:14 left to play, the Lions tied it up.  Senior Lindsey D’Andrea (Medford, NJ) scored her first goal of the season off a pass from teammate freshman midfielder Casey Jablonski (Orchard Park, NY).

The score remained tied until the Colonels regained the lead when junior Suzie Jensen (Framingham, MA) placed a perfect pass to teammate freshman Brittany McLaughlin (Wilmington, MA) who scored in the top-right corner of the net.  Curry continued to out-shoot Emerson but at the 59:29 mark the Lions’ D’Andrea scored her second goal of the night and tied the game at two apiece.  Both teams battled back-and-forth each having their share of scoring opportunities but they would finish in regulation tied 2-2.

The two teams entered overtime which is a ten minute sudden death half.  Curry got control of the ball early to start and with just five minutes in, senior forward Sam Velezis (Waterbury, CT) scored the game-winner.

Freshman Jill Dean (Lynn, Mass) got her first collegiate start in net and made 10 saves.  In net for Curry to start the game was sophomore Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, MA) who made one save.  Hardy also reentered the game for overtime but did not see a shot on net.  Freshman Haley Lorge (Beverly, MA) played in her first collegiate game and made five saves.

The Colonels will travel to Framingham State University on Wednesday, September 7 for a 4:00 p.m contest. Emerson will host Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday September 7 for a 5:30 p.m. game start.
