Women's Soccer Loses its Home Opener to Fitchburg State University 3-1

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College lost to Fitchburg State University on Thursday in Milton.  With the win the Falcons improve to 1-0 overall.  The Colonels fall to 0-1 overall. 

Fitchburg got on the board first at the 19:11 mark after freshman Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass.) crossed the ball to teammate junior Julie Dowson (Winthrop, Mass.) who put it past Curry's sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.).  The Colonels had their fair share of shots on net and at the 33:11 mark freshman Brittany McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal after a Fitchburg goalie rebound.  The two teams traded shots for the remainder of the period and headed into half-time tied at one a piece.

The Falcons got control of the ball early in the second and with just under ten minutes into the half Fitchburg regained the lead.  Senior Courtney Kimball (Plymouth, Mass.) received a long pass from senior Heather Sharp (Halifax, Mass.) and scored to put her team up by one.  The Colonels had their scoring chances but couldn't get one by the Falcons goalkeepr.  Fitchburg got one more goal late in the game for the 3-1 win.  Junior Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass.) dribbled the ball past Curry's goalkeeper and netted the game winner with less than six minutes left in regulation.   

Freshman Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass) got her first collegiate start in net and made five saves and allowed the Colonels lone goal before leaving the game with an injury. Junior Melanie Berent (West Hartford, CT) came in to finish the game and made five saves for the win.  In net for Curry was Hardy who made seven saves.

The Colonels will host Emerson College on Saturday, September 4 in a 6:00 p.m contest. Fitchburg State University will host Plymouth State University on Saturday September 4 for a 12:00 p.m. game.
