Western New England Tops Women's Lacrosse Behind First-Half Flurry on Senior Day
MILTON, Mass. – An early first-half surge propelled Western New England University to a 21-7 victory over Curry College on Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's lacrosse showdown at Walter M. Katz Field on Senior Day.
Senior Reilly Miller (Goshen, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals and added one assist to lead the Golden Bears (4-1 overall, 4-1 CCC) while junior Hannah Jarvis (Westfield, Mass.), junior Samantha Vitka (Stratford, Conn.), freshman Ally Ferraro (Hamden, Conn.), and junior Liz Mazza (East Longmeadow, Mass.) all added three goals apiece. Freshman Anabella Arias (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) registered two goals to round out the student-athletes with multiple tallies for the visitors. Freshman Chloe Chevrier (West Suffield, Conn.) tallied two goals while senior Katie Parker (Branford, Conn.) recorded two goals and one assist to pace the Colonels (1-5 overall, 1-5 CCC).
Western New England netted the first three goals of the contest in the opening 1:12. Chevrier got Curry on the board with an unassisted marker just seven seconds later. The Golden Bears answered back with four straight to stretch the lead to 7-1. Parker put an end to the second spurt when she found the back of the net for the first of her two on the afternoon.
Western New England would go on to outscore the Colonels 9-3 for the remainder of the half to carry a 16-5 lead into the break.
The Golden Bears kept the offense going in the second half as they opened the stanza with four straight to build a 20-5 lead with 11:19 to play. Curry would find the back of the net two more times before the end of the contest, one from freshman Ellie Hardman (Hanover, Mass.) and the other from junior Sharon Doherty (North Easton, Mass.). Junior Madisyn Crotta (West Haven, Conn.) tallied the final goal for Western New England.
Curry sophomore goalie Amanda Benedetti (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) faced 22 shots and finished with one save. Senior Kaitlyn Marchant (Londonderry, N.H.) turned away seven shots between the pipes for the Golden Bears and improved to 4-1 in the cage.
Curry remains home to host Endicott College on Wednesday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. Western New England returns to action at home at Roger Williams University on Saturday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m.
