MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's lacrosse team ran over the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College with a 15-2 triumph on Thursday evening. In their final non-conference home game of the year, the hosts scored early and often to put the game out of hand quickly. The win brings the Colonels' overall record to 7-5 while the loss drops RIC to 3-4.
Through just three minutes of the game, RIC was assessed the first (and only) yellow card of the day, giving the Colonels an early player advantage. Just 39 seconds later, Katie Tarr (Atkinson, N.H.) made good on the opportunity by netting the first Curry goal of the day. Despite returning to even strength, the Colonels doubled their lead on an unassisted marker from Leona Stevens (Kingston, Mass.) just 52 seconds later. The 2-0 lead would stand for five minutes before Taylor Gallagher (Rockland, Mass.) managed to beat Julia Eaton (Cumberland, R.I.) to take a three-goal edge. The ensuing three minutes would see just as many tallies for the hosts as they broke the game open at 6-0. Over the final half of the first frame, Curry added four more goals to their score, led by Stevens picking up a hat trick. Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) notched the final Colonel goal of the half to make it a 10-0 game and put in place the running clock.
Following the intermission, the hosts wasted little time in finding the net once again, as Allie Wysocki (Agawam, Mass.) made it 11-0 with her second goal of the contest. With 16 minutes left to play, Katie Parker (Branford, Conn.) grabbed her third marker of the day before Wysocki did the same following a save by goalie Jessica Ginaitt (Warwick, R.I.) after the ensuing draw control. Sporting a 13-0 lead, the Colonels refused to take their foot off the gas, as two more goals found their way into the net, with the clock continuing to wind. With four and a half minutes remaining, Giana Ritchie (Cumberland, R.I.) finally broke through for the Anchorwomen, scoring their first goal of the day. RIC scored once more with under two minutes to play, but the tally would be the last, as the Colonels earned a 15-2 victory to improve to 5-1 at Walter M. Katz Field.
The box score of this game is very telling, as the Colonels as a team dominated RIC all over the stat sheet. Curry picked up 30 ground balls to the Anchorwomen's 14. The hosts committed 20 turnovers, but benefitted from the 32 by their guests, nine of which were forced. Curry was especially commanding in the first half, controlling eight of the eleven draws, which led to extensive time in the offensive zone, where they recorded 26 shots. Aiding their lengthy possessions was their consistency during clear attempts, going a perfect 14-14 in the first frame and 22-23 over the full tilt.
Parker led the scoring charge with four points on four goals, while Stevens' three goals and an assist gave her four points as well. Ritchie and Madison McKenna (Cumberland, R.I.) put up the only two points for the Anchorwomen, both on goals, while Easton (3-4) suffers the loss despite making 18 saves. Ginaitt (7-5) gets the much-deserved win, as her seven saves improve her Goals Against Average to 11.9, moving her up to fourth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).
The Colonels return to the field on Saturday, April 6 as Gordon College comes to town for a 12:30 p.m. CCC match-up. Curry looks to hold off the Fighting Scots who currently sit just one game behind them in the conference standings. The Anchorwomen also get back to action on Saturday, as they host the Plymouth State Panthers. The Little East Conference foes are slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
