Women's Lacrosse Outlasted by Visiting Western New England 11-7 in CCC Action

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's lacrosse team fell to Western New England 11-7 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Wednesday night at the Walter M. Katz Field. The loss drops the Colonels to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the CCC. The Golden Bears improve to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Western New England jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game.  Sophomore Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.) struck first for the Golden Bears off a pass from freshman Lindsay Phillips (E. Longmeadow, Mass.).  Phillips dished out another helper just 23 seconds later, this time to freshman Madison Barron (Lebanon, Pa.).  Senior Emma Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) netted an unassisted goal after firing one past Curry's senior goaltender Rachel Smith (Arlington, Mass.).  The Colonels cut the lead down to two after senior Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) tallied back-to-back scores.  Western New England would then embark on a 4-0 run to extend their advantage to 7-2.  Phillips found the back of the net twice off assists by juniors Rachel Canning (Lincoln Park, N.J.) and Julia Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.).  Senior Malorie Knowton (Norfolk, Mass.) responded with two of her own, with senior Rachael Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.) helping on one.  The Golden Bears however would notch one more before the buzzer off the stick of Phillips from Canning to head into intermission with an 8-4 score.

The second period was well played by both team's defenses as they held each squad to just three goals apiece.  Parker netted her third on the night on an unassisted goal to start the frame.  Western New England sparked another three goal run, two from Canning and one from junior Emily Dolan (Merrick, N.Y.) from an assist by Canning.  The Colonels defense held the Golden Bears scoreless over the last 13:00 minutes of play.  Curry reeled off the final two goals but the effort wasn't enough to pull off the win.  Senior Abby Carnevale (Beverly, Mass.) ripped in a free position shot and senior Lauren Carroll (Providence, R.I.) netted an unassisted goal at 2:57 showing on the clock.

Canning led all players with six points on two goals and four assists. Canning was followed by Phillips who pitched in a hat trick and helped on two for five points. 

Parker led the Colonels with three points on three tallies while Knowlton followed with two points on two goals.  Carroll and Carnevale each had a goal and Lawrence had one assist.  Parker also led all players with seven draw controls.  Knowlton and sophomore Harper Meakin (Marblehead, Mass.) both led in caused turnovers with four.  Freshman Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) had three caused turnovers.  Meakin and freshman Abby Guilfoil (Nashua, N.H.) each scooped up five groundballs. 

Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) picked up the win in the cage for Western New England, making an impressive 19 saves in 60 minutes of action. Smith was credited the loss, stopping 13 shots.

Curry will next play on Saturday as they host Wentworth at 12:00 p.m. Western New England returns to action also on Saturday as they host Endicott at 1:00 p.m.
