Women's Lacrosse Earns First Win of the Season Defeating Baldwin-Wallace, 12-9

BRADENTON, Fla. – Curry College women's lacrosse team defeated The Baldwin Wallace University, 12-9, in Bradenton, Florida on Tuesday.

BW (0-1) was led by the quartet of attack freshman Caitlin Wheeler (River Forest, Ill./ Oak Park-River Forest), senior midfielder Cara Wood (Shaker Heights/ Laurel), sophomore attack Jenna Turner (Carmel, Ind./ Carmel) and sophomore midfielder Katie Kocher (Rocky River) each scored a pair of goals. Wheeler, Turner, senior attack Colleen Bodkin (East Aurora, N.Y./ East Aurora) and junior attack Emma Harding (Akron/ Richfield Revere) each had an assist.

Curry (1-2) was led by sophomore midfielders Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) and Mallory Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) with three goals and an assist each for four points.  Junior Alexis Cran (Branford, Conn.) and sophomore Lauren Carroll (Providence, R.I.) each had three points on a pair of goals and an assist and sophomore Rachel Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.) netted two goals.

BW outshot Curry, 32-20, including a 23-17 advantage in shots on-goal. Curry had a 21-13 advantage in ground balls and 14-9 in draw controls. BW edged Curry in caused turnovers 16-15.

In the first half, BW gained a 1-0 lead at 28:47 when Kocher scored via an assist from Harding. After Curry tied it at 1-1 at 28:17 off an unassisted tally by Parker, Wood scored via a Turner assist at 19:03 for a 2-1 lead. Curry scored the next three goals to take a 4-2 advantage by Knowlton, Parker and Lawrence before Wheeler scored unassisted at 7:26 to make it 4-3. Curry closed out the scoring with a goal at 2:25 from Carroll to lead 5-3 at the intermission.

In the second half, Curry scored the first two goals one by Knowlton and the other by Lawrence off an assist by Parker to build a 7-3 lead before Wood scored her second goal at 19:36 to cut the deficit to 7-4. After Curry scored a pair of goals, another unassisted tally by Knowlton and a Knowlton assist to Cran to lead 9-4, BW got a goal from Turner via a Bodkin assist at 14:52, Wheeler's second goal at 11:10 and Kocher's second at 8:38 to close the gap to 9-7.

Curry made it 10-7 at 6:29 from a free-position tally by Carroll but Bodkin equalized at 4:06 to make it 10-8. A pair of goals by the Colonels at 2:49 from Parker and 1:01 by Cran, respectively, made it 12-8 before Turner closed out the scoring in the last second.

The Colonels senior Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) made an impressive 14 saves in net for the win. 

BW plays Becker College on Thursday, March 12 in Florida at 12:30.  Curry is next in action on Tuesday, March 17 when they host Johnson & Wales in a 6:00 p.m. start.  (Game Recap Courtesy of BW Sports Information)
