Women's Hockey Topples UNE

Canton, MA - The Curry Women's Hockey team took down the University of New England on Friday by a score of 2-1. The Colonels improve to 7-12-1 on the season and 6-8-0 in CNE play. The Nor'easters are now 9-10-1 and 7-6-1. The Colonels win the season series 2-1.

The Colonels struck first a little over eight minutes into the game when Danielle Reid knocked down a pass in the defensive zone, and then took the puck the distance to the other end of the ice, flipping a backhand shot into the back of the net. It was while the Colonels were on the penalty kill, and gave Reid her team high eighth goal of the season.

That would be the only goal until halfway through the second period when UNE found an equalizer. But the Colonels would stay composed and got the lead back seven minutes later when Grayson Goolgasian forced a turnover in the offensive zone as the Nor'easters tried to clear the puck, and then passed it to Bella Mardesich, who put the puck behind the goalie. The Nor'easters would pull their goalie with about a minute remaining in the third period, but were unable to find a tying goal.

The game was controlled by the Colonels, as they outshot UNE 30-13, and won 30 of 48 faceoffs. Curry goalie Sarah Kerr made 12 saves in the win.

The game also saw a milestone from senior Kalie Gruhlke, as after the first shift of the game she became the first player in program history to play in 100 games.

Up Next - The Colonels will travel to JWU on Saturday for a 5pm game.
