Women's Ice Hockey Shocks Suffolk in CCC Quarterfinal

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - The seventh-seeded Curry College women's ice hockey team pulled off a stunning upset on Wednesday evening in the Quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, defeating second-seeded Suffolk University 3-2 at the Louis E. Porrazzo Rink.

With the win, the Colonels move to 4-21-1 overall on the season and advance to the league semifinals at Endicott on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.

Curry opened the scoring early in the second period when freshman Hannah Berkowitz (Mattawan, Mich.) popped in a rebound for her second goal of the season just under four minutes into the middle frame. Credited with assists on the goal were Paige Rodriguez (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Ali Olorenshaw (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).

Suffolk scored two goals in just over four minutes late in the second frame to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Payton Dockus and Sam Molind scored the goals for the hosts.

Less than a minute and a half into the third, Curry tied things back up on a power play goal from Danielle Stein (Planview, N.Y.). Berkowitz and defenseman Kenzie Fogarty (Roseville, Calif.) earned assists on the game-tying tally.

With just under nine minutes to play, Curry netted the eventual game-winner when Kourtney Mielke (Hutchinson, Minn.) converted on a 2-on-1, freezing the Suffolk netminder and roofing a shot high on the glove side.

Curry survived a 5-on-3 in the final minute to close out the upset. Maddy Burton rang the post for the Rams with under a minute to play, while Olorenshaw made one of her seven blocked shots down the stretch to seal the victory.

Goaltender Anna Langton (Zimmerman, Minn.) was the star of the night for Curry, making an astounding 45 saves en route to her fourth victory of the season.

The upset victory comes just six days after Curry lost to the same Suffolk team by a final score of 9-1.
