Women's Ice Hockey Cut Down by Salve Regina

CANTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's ice hockey team dropped a 5-4 decision to Salve Regina University Tuesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Canton Ice House.

With the defeat, Curry drops to 3-14-0 overall on the season and 1-10-0 in conference action.

Neither team scored in the first 15 minutes of the contest, but a quick flurry of goals in the closing minutes of the frame saw Curry hold a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. Paige Stapleton opened the scoring for Salve Regina at 15:11, but the Colonels responded 1:42 later when Grayson Goolgasian (Johnston, R.I.) knocked home a feed from Paige Rodriguez (Eau Claire, Wis.) to level the score. With 0.3 seconds remaining on the clock, Hannah Berkowitz (Mattawan, Mich.) beat the clock for her first collegiate goal.

Both teams scored twice in the second period to continue the offensive onslaught. Goolgasian put Curry up by a pair on an unassisted wrap-around goal at the 2:59 mark, but Salve cut the deficit back down to 3-2 just 54 seconds later on Emma Gotthelf's third goal of the season.

Caroline Cadelina leveled the score for the Seahawks at 3-3 at the 8:31 mark of the second, but Curry quickly broke the tie when Kourtney Mielke (Hutchinson, Minn.) tapped home a Berkowitz feed at the 9:42 mark to put her team back up by a goal.

The 4-3 score held up until just past the six-minute mark of the third, when Maddie Cox drew Salve back even at 4-4. Just under four minutes later, at the exact midpoint of the third, Colby Lopez-Balboa put the Seahawks ahead for good on the breakaway. The goal would hold up as the game-winner as Salve Regina held on for the 5-4 win.

Anna Langton (Zimmerman, Minn.) took the loss between the pipes for Curry, making 20 saves.

The Colonels and Seahawks will continue their three-game set at the Canton Ice House on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
