MILTON, Mass. - Curry College was defeated 55-53 by Gordon College in a Conference of New England women's basketball game Wednesday afternoon at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.
With the loss, the Colonels' overall record falls to 5-11 while their conference record drops to 2-7.
After a slow first quarter where the two teams combined for only 12 points, both offenses jumped into gear in the second quarter. The opponents went back and forth with six lead changes in the first half alone. Gordon took a one-point lead late in the second but a last-second layup from Emerson Cherry sent the Colonels to the locker room with a 24-23 lead.
The visitors slowly built a lead in the second half, amassing a nine-point advantage with just over two minutes remaining in the contest. Back-to-back clutch threes by Lauren Dunn and Lauren Morse cut the Gordon lead to just three (53-50) with just over 30 seconds remaining. Unfortunately for the Colonels, a pair of free throws by the Fighting Scots put the game just out of reach despite another last-second three from Morse.
Morse knocked down five three-pointers throughout the game to lead the Colonels with 18 points. Kasey Reeves finished with 10 points and seven rebounds while Sophie Hilbrunner led the team with 10 rebounds, adding four points.
Curry College returns to action on Saturday, January 25th, to host Suffolk at Katz Gymnasium beginning at noon.
