Colonels Challenged by Golden Bears in Conference Action

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Basketball team fell to conference opponent Western New England Tuesday evening, with a final score of 81-31.
With the loss on the road, the Colonels fall to 3-12 overall this season and 0-8 in the CCC. The Golden Bears improve to 6-10 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
The night's contest began in favor of the Golden Bears. An 8-0 run capped off with a layup from WNE's Grace Fisher granted the hosts a comfortable lead early in the contest. Curry retaliated with an Emerson Cherry (Sturbridge, Mass.) layup and a shot knocked down from beyond the arc by Lily Gray (Brooksville, Maine). Curry guard Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) recorded another three for the Colonels late in the first period of play and Gray closed out the opening quarter with a layup, closing the deficit to nine. Through strong defensive efforts, the Golden Bears held the Colonels to just one basket in the second quarter, cushioning their lead even further heading into the half.
The hosts entered the second half with a commanding lead and shot 50% (8-16) from the field while holding Curry to 30.8% (4-13) in the third quarter. The hosting Golden Bears would continue on their dominant attacking patterns through the completion of the contest, defeating the visiting Colonels 81-31.
Western New England's Golden Bears were led by Shania Cooney who tallied 15 points and 14 rebounds in the win.
The Colonels were led by freshman guard Emerson Cherry who recorded 9 points in the loss on the road.
Curry gets back out on the court Thursday as they take a short trip down the road to face conference opponent Wentworth at 5:30 PM.
