Colonels Defeated by Hawks in Conference Action

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Curry College Women's Basketball team was downed by the Hawks of Roger Williams University by a final score of 79-47.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. With the win, Roger Williams continues their unbeaten streak, improving to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCC.

The Colonels had their work cut out for them Saturday afternoon as they headed to Bristol, R.I. to take on an undefeated conference opponent Roger Williams University. Curry forward Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) knocked down a three early in the contest grabbing the short-lived lead for the Colonels. With another jumper by Dunn and contributions from Krystianna Remillard (Abington, Mass.), Kylie McCarthy (Beverly, Mass.), and Lily Gray (Brooksville, Maine); the Colonels stayed with the hosts, closing out the first quarter down just two points 14-16. 

The second quarter proceeded in favor of the hosting Hawks. A 12-2 run in the first six and a half minutes granted Roger Williams a comfortable lead as they neared the half. Roger Williams' Karli Opalka and Kendi Barnard led their side in the second. In the final minutes of the half, the Colonels managed to gain momentum, stirring up a 9-5 with a buzzer beater three-pointer from Kaitlynn Smith. The teams would go into the half with a score of 25-33 in favor of the hosts.

The third quarter saw an overwhelming shift in intensity from the hosts. Roger Williams tallied 24 points in the quarter and held Curry to just 11. The Hawks shot 42.1% from the field compared to the Colonel's 28.6% in the third quarter. The contest would continue on this trend, the hosts holding Curry to 11 points in the fourth quarter as well. The afternoon's game concluded 47-79 in favor of the undefeated Hawks.

The Colonels were led by Kaitlynn Smith who recorded 15 points and 4 rebounds; and Kathryn Dunn who marked 10 points in the Colonel's loss. Roger Williams was led by Karli Opalka who tallied 22 points with 14 rebounds in the win. 

The Curry College women's basketball team gets back out on the court Tuesday, December 7, as they travel to take on Salve Regina. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
