Women's Basketball Edged By Nichols on Senior Night

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball squad lost its 2021 home finale, 66-56, to Nichols College on Friday night at the Katz Gymnasium on Senior Night. The Colonels honored its lone senior Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.) in a special pregame ceremony.

Nichols was led by freshman Abrianna Vazquez (Dedham, Mass.) with 22 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Senior Isabella Nerney (Guilford, Conn.) chipped 18 points, two boards, an assist, and a steal.

Sophomore Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) paced Curry with 16 points off the bench. Classmate Kristyanna Remillard (Abington, Mass.) tallied 11 points and six boards. Coote pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.

The teams played an even opening three minutes as they would be deadlocked at seven. Neither team led by more than three in the first quarter as the Colonels would come out on top, 18-16, after one.

The Bison came out strong in the second quarter, scoring the first 13 points of the frame to grab a 29-20 advantage with 5:43 to go. The Colonels came back with six straight to pull with three following a layup by Kai. Smith with 1:13 remaining in the quarter. Two free throws for Nichols followed by a layup by sophomore Katie Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) rounded out the scoring in the first 20 minutes of action as the Bison entered the half with a 31-28 lead.

Nichols would extend its advantage to as many as eight in the third, but Curry had the response. The Colonels trimmed the deficit to two (50-48) with a 7-1 run in the final 3:09 of the stanza.  

The Bison closed the game strong, outscoring Curry 16-8 in the final quarter to snag the ten-point victory. Nichols held the Colonels to just 12 percent shooting in the last frame.

The teams will wrap up its home-and-home series tomorrow, Saturday, March 27 at Nichols. Tip off is set for noon.
