Women's Basketball Stumbles at Gordon, 73-43

WENHAM, Mass. – Gordon College defeated Curry College, 73-43, on Saturday afternoon in women's basketball action at the Bennett Center.

The Fighting Scots improved to 2-0 on the season while the Colonels slipped to 0-2. Freshman Caroline Sikkink (Fairview, N.C.) paced all scorers with 21 points. Three other starters plus freshman reserve Cara Andreotti (Everett, Mass.) joined Sikkink in double figures.

Gordon started the game on an 8-0 run and never looked back in the wire-to-wire victory. The home squad shot 53 percent in the opening frame, which helped build a 21-9 lead after the first. Curry responded in the second, outscoring the home squad, 12-9, but would still trail 30-21 at the half.

The break in action only spurred the Fighting Scots on as they opened the third quarter on a 17-0 run over almost seven minutes to take a 47-21 lead.

The second half was all Gordon as the Fighting Scots led by as many as 34 points and ran away with its second-straight victory.

Gordon won the battle on the boards 40-29 while also winning the turnover battle, committing 21 turnovers to the Colonels' 26. The Fighting Scots converted the Curry missteps into 24 points while also outscoring the Colonels 32-12 in the paint and running away with six fast break points.

Senior Megan Hasty (Vernon, Conn.) scored 12 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting while also adding four boards, three assists, and two steals. Senior Abby Vampatella (Mansfield Center, Conn.) was also perfect from the floor, knocking down all four of her shots while also converting three free throws. Sophomore Madison Wynbeek (North Haledon, N.J.) rounded out the scorers in double figures with 10 to go along with six rebounds, two assists, three steals, and a block while Andreotti pitched in with 11 points off the bench. Freshman Caleigh Williams (Kent, Wash.) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds while Sikkink tallied a game-high five assists.

Sophomore Kristyanna Remillard (Abington, Mass.) led Curry with 12 points while also adding three rebounds, a steal, and a block. Classmate Lillian Gray (Brooksville, Maine) contributed eight points and four boards in 18 minutes. Four of the five starters for the Colonels registered at least five points in the defeat.

Curry will next travel to Suffolk University on Friday, March 12 at 6:00 p.m.
