Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team dropped an 83-55 decision in its season opener against Gordon College on Friday night at the Katz Gymnasium.

The Fighting Scots (2-1 overall) had four players score in double figures led a double-double performance of 24 points and 11 rebounds from Madison Wynbeek (North Haledon, N.J.). Serianna Anderson (Newcastle, Wash.) finished with 19 while Caroline Sikkink (Fairview, N.C.) and Abby Vampatella (Mansfield Center, Conn.) chipped in 13 apiece.

Curry shot just 32 percent for the game and went 9-for-24 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) paced the Colonels (0-1 overall) with 14 points in 32 minutes. Classmate Lillian Gray (Brooksville, Maine) led the scoring output off the bench with eight.

Gordon scored the first points of the game and built its lead to nine by the end of the opening quarter. The Colonels pulled to within two in the second on free throws by Kristyanna Remillard with 1:37 remaining in the half. The Fighting Scots would go into the break with a 34-31 advantage. The contest remained close in the as Gordon would lead by eight after three quarters of play. Gordon blew the game open in the final stanza, outscoring Curry 27-7 and stretched the lead to as many as 29 before the final buzzer.

The two squads will face off again on Saturday, March 6 at Gordon at 1:00 p.m.
