Women’s Basketball Bests Pine Manor to Grab First Win

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Curry College women's basketball team won the consolation game at the University of St. Joseph tournament on Saturday afternoon over the Pine Manor Gators by a score of 77-58. After the win, the Colonels improve to 1-4 on the year, while the Gators fall to 0-2.

Kathrynn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) kicked off the game with a layup to get the scoring started. A Pine Manor bucket tied the score, but the Colonels retook the lead on their next possession at 4-2. After tying the score at 4-all, Pine Manor got a three from Telaisha Soler (Lawrence, Mass.), which made the score 8-7, Curry, but the remainder of the quarter saw the Colonels stretch their lead to a 12-point margin.

As the second quarter began, Katie Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) nailed a triple to bring the lead to 15 at 28-13, before a layup from Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.) gave Curry a 21-point lead just three minutes later. A bucket by the Gators' Ladaeja Robinson (Boston, Mass.) would stand to be the final score of the half, but the Colonels took a commanding 41-23 advantage into the break.

On the first possession of the second half, the Colonels picked up right where they left off, as Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) hit a three-pointer to make the score 44-23, before a jumper from Angeliki Maniatis (Watertown, Mass.) extended their edge to 56-33 with 4:47 left to play in the third. The Gators went nearly bucket-for-bucket with the Colonels as the stanza progressed, but Curry stayed firmly in control of the game as the teams entered the fourth quarter with a score of 68-43. Pine Manor looked to cut into their foes' lead in the final frame, but could not get the deficit any smaller than 19, as the Colonels closed the game strong and secured their first win of the season with a 77-58 score.

In the victory, Curry was led by the 14 points of Kai. Smith, while Kat. Smith led the team with seven assists and six rebounds, the latter of which tied teammates Dunn and Kirsten Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.). Nandi Eskridge (Pacifica, Calif.) turned in 12 points for the Gators and led all players with nine boards. Solier registered five assists for Pine Manor. After the game, Kat. Smith and Eskridge were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Colonels will look to make it two-in-a-row on Tuesday, November 19, as they host the Fitchburg State Falcons at 5:30 p.m. The Gators will also get back on the court on Tuesday, as they travel to Bay Path for a non-conference match-up at 8:00 p.m.
